Hi Everyone! MuppetGuy here. I guess I'm the new kid on the block. :) A couple friends of mine and I are making a pilot for a show we're doing. Its called "Stanley Something" and it's about a fraggle-ish thing that has no idea what he is, so he classifies himself as a Something. The one thing that has really become a road-block for me is the setting. I would like it in an urban-feeling set, but I don't want viewers to think "Sesame Street." So then I thought about a more rural set, but then the show would lose some of its realism. What should I do?!

DO YOU HAVE A PICTURE OF YOUR PUPPET THAT YOU WILL BE USING? AND WHATS IN YOUR AREA THAT IS DIFFERENT THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE AS A BACK GROUND FOR YOUR PUPPET SHOW? MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE A DOWNED TREE IN A WOODS TO HIDE BEHIND? ANY MUSEUMS AROUND? WE HAVE A TRAIN MUSEUM HERE. AND IF YOU ASK PERMISSION MOST PLACES WOULD LET YOU FILM A PUPPET SHOW . AND IF YOU FILM YOUR SHOW GO THUR PHOTOBUCKET TO POST IT. THEN SHOW ALL OF US WHAT YOU CAN DO. BREAK A LEG..MEANS GOOD LUCK..

Build a set... you'll love it if you make it ... muppets have ruined most shows for puppets...it sort of ..as much as i love them..it's something that just is there we all have to look to... our show is certainly not muppet like..but i always get asked about the muppets..and i'm kinda tired of it. I liked the early muppets way before their first movie came out..i'm talking way back.

anyway... urban or suburban.. just make it yourself.. www.thecheapshow.com

Well Sesame Street is very classic Brooklyn, NY so what about the exact opposite like - New Orleans has such picturesque architecture, great history, music and a lush green feel, or Venice Beach, LA where it's a beach/city feel people with all sorts of weird and wacky types performing on the sand, or if you want to stick with the Northeast, maybe somewhere like Providence where you have these wonderful clusters of old colonials, a canal with fire pits, tons of hip and artsy students and a downtown with skyscrapers and the typical city feel. Or maybe a mix of them all?

I think if you shy away from the residential brownstone/brick block with cement sidewalks, and the occasional tree and spice it up with other architectural styles, even focusing on the more modern NY architecture, it will help to differentiate from Sesame Street.

And if nothing else, suburban kids have serious identity issues, says a Pennsylvania native.

How about a zoo? That way he can look at all the animals trying to work out what he is and then decide he's something else.. he can ask passers by .. "hey.. if I stand next to this giraffe.. I kinda have his eyes, right? Family resemblence?" :D

Not sure if you have an ending for it but you could decide that he doesn't work out 'what' he is but he does work out he is a friend and son and brother and... etc etc and it doesn't really matter 'what' he is other than that.. or have I been watching too much kids tv with morals :P hmmm..

Oh and I love stanley, he's sweet, my grandfathers name was Stanley but your Stanley doesn't have the eyebrows!

I definately think I'm building my own set. There' s a possibility that there might be some on location segments...but who knows! Its been hard comig up with characters and situations that haven't already been done by the muppets. I love 'em anyway! Thanks for all the suggestions! :}

PS- thanks for the comment on Stanley. He has really become the face of my company (which could really use a name). There is two new Stanleys being built for the promo. Sleeping Stanley and Stanley with Legs.
