Puppet Hub

A global network for professionals, amateurs, and people who just like puppets.

Looking for suggestions for puppet-related DVD rentals (i.e. my Netflix queue, for those familiar). What's great that I might have missed? Kids' stuff or adult, it's all of interest to me.

(I will kick things off. My recommendation, for those who might not have seen them: the Curious Buddies videos from Spiffy Pictures. Reeeeaally cute, really nicely done. For little kids, though not necessarily quite as little as they market them for. You'll recognize the look of the puppets from Jack's Big Music Show and Bunnytown, but these came first.)

Speaking from a marionettist point of view:
'Strings' or anything from the saltzburg marionette theatre

Films with small puppetry segments: 'Being John Malkovich' or 'Still Breathing'
This one: http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Strings/70036125?trkid=222336&lnkc...

It was at one of the national festivals and at the Seattle International Film Festival, Tis neato. Oh, same as the post above, but I gave you a link. :)
Wow many to choose from--basically horro flicks are using more puppets than ever. Killer Klowns from Outer Space is from the chido Brothers, old reruns of HR Puffenstuff thats Sid and Marty Kroft. Muppet Show of course, all can be found on dvd now. Now for building I suggest 4 to start with
The Foam Book by Grey Seal Productions
Arms Length Productions by David Pannabecker, Puppet making by Verna Finly,
and Molding puppets by Noreen Young
these four have helped me alot all on dvd but sometimes hard to find.
Bob Kelmer HenHouse Puppets
LOL I was talking to Pasha at Project Puppet about this... LOL... I don't have kids, but find myself telling the cashier at Blockbuster the "Big Bird: Follow that Bird" video is for my kids and not me LOL
Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone! (Especially thanks for reminding me about "Strings", which I heard about and meant to see, but somehow manage to forget completely.)
"Johnny and the Sprites" just came out on DVD from its first season.

It's not netflix, but for a while you could rent collections from the Puppeteer's of America including "The World of Jim Henson" (I believe that is the title) where Jim Henson interviewed puppeteers from around the world.

And even further from DVD's: on the internet there is theragshow.com which is great.

Heather Henson also has a series of a collection of puppet film shorts by various artists called "Handmade Puppet Dreams". The series is screened all over the world and several of the films from it are available on dvd, if not for rent, then for purchase (www.handmadepuppetdreams.com or they are on myspace for the latest screening locations)
The puppetry and writing are good. The music is awesome. (IMHO)
Well, now I have, because I googled it and found this.

Very cool. The style seems familiar. I've probably seen some of it before, somewhere.
If you do any sort of clay sculpting for your puppets, I highly, highly recommend Wendy Froud's Creating a Fairy figure tutorial. I think a lot of her techniques would transfer over to say marionettes, and she is incredible at making you aware of all the little details that can go into a body and make it lifelike.

I am a loyal Netflix fan, renting DVDs since 2000. A real nice feature of Netflix is that you can simply type words into the search engine and it will generate a nice list for you. Try searching on puppet, Henson, Gerry Anderson, Sylvia Anderson and Mitchell Kriegman. I was surprised to find several of Paul Mesner's shows on the list. I was also surprised to find some others not on the list that you should check out:
Being John Malkovich
Team America World Police
Blackbeard the Pirate
The Sound of Music

These are just a few off the top of my head. Let me know what you find interesting.
