Hi there,

I studied & worked in Saint Petersburg where puppet theatres perform serious plays for adult audience, a-la dramatic theatre.

I'm curious how is it going in other countries. Are puppet theatres perform mostly shows for kids?

One such Theater in a suburb of Chicago.     Think it somehow migrated to the USA from Europe at some point in history.

Always a challenge to start such. A newspaper story about Andrew Lloyd Webber - not puppets-and not a performer, but one of the most successful musical creators of the 20th/21st century.    Read this story, he notes he is always challenged at idea that each time may be a failure.   At the start it starts small - and for every success there are more failures.    Need to start small and see what works.

What I have tried (suggested to me by others) perform in an unconventional setting - doing something else.    Examples I have done are intermission of running the lights for a community theater, and the info booth for a town festival - more just practice of syncing the mouth movements to songs - getting voices to the puppets is harder.   I am always impressed at those who can do many unique voices.    Need a recording device to see what works and what does not - a simple video camera/phone best - though audio recordings work for voice practice too.

Never stop trying to do what you want, but have something else to pay the bills.   Performers on Broadway in New York come from all over the USA, or even world - yet, they may land a show elsewhere like Wisconsin or a cruise ship.    With puppets - it is a small world with the Muppets as the only big time long term successes.   Yet, there last show aimed at an older audience left the format too far behind (was a variety show that did best).   Last effort was more a reality show.   It failed in its first season.   Yet even the Muppets go on to something new all the time, looking for a success.

Muppets owner Disney would help all puppet shows to have a real success again, since the original adult version.   See the first link if you can watch a short video?

Muppet show pitch video that lead to CBS purchase of the show for several major cities in the USA that gave puppets a television and movie version for adults beyond the kids shows.
