For me it is difficult enough not moving my lips, so I can´t really understand how you can throw your voice so as to seem that you are far away. Can any of you throw your voice, if so, how do you do it?

Hello Claudia, that saying is actually not true, nobody can throw their voice, the sound still comes out of their voice box, HOWEVER, you can give the illusion that the sound is coming from another part of the room, when that happens, it seems that a voice is being thrown elsewhere. I have dear friends that can 'throw their voice"
but remember it is an illusion, they act as if the sound is coming from somewhere else. your mind is being tricked and your imagination wants to be fooled. So the saying "throwing your voice" is not really true. but it is true that you believe that the sound is coming somewhere else.
Hi Claudia,
"Throwing your voice" takes misdirection in creating the illusion of it originating elsewhere. The Great Lester used to do his bit where as someone was in the basement talking up to him and someone in the overhead in the theater setting speaking down to him. The use of "the distant" voice plus the drawing attention by looking in the direction, keying the audience to suspect something is happening elsewhere, and it is all about timing and imagination projected. Paul Winchell used to cast his voice into a bottle and cap it with his hand only to life his hand moments later to "release" the afore captured "echo". hope this helps. Check out his book.

Claudia,

If you haven't purchased it already, you should really consider purchasing the Maher Homestudy course in ventriloquism. It is the standard that all other courses are judged by and is very affordable. It will teach you everything you need to know about ventriloquism including near and distant voices. Doing the distant voices is a skill that requires practice, practice, and more practice to get it right. It also helps to have the right tools too. The maher course can be purchased through Clinton Detweiler, who is a retired maker of ventriloquist figures and on ebay. Clinton usually sells it there as sell.

Here's his website.

Hi Mark, thank you very much for your reply to my discussion, I´ve been to the site you recommended and I thought it was great that they have dvds that teach us how to became a ventriloquist, reading from books helps, but to have a "class" through tv is even better because you can hear and see another person doing it. I am going to purchase one or two, once again thanks.

Claudia,

Mark Wade, the guy who teaches on the dvd's, learned ventriloquism through the Maher course and he constantly references back to it as the best way to learn ventriloquism. The dvd's are good and a nice reference point but only show you a brief glimpse of ventriloquism. Also, everything that Mark covers on the dvd's is in the course. Please understand, I'm not pushing the course because I get anything for doing it. It really is the best course available. Another good site for ventriloquist books, dvd's and the like is Lee Cornell's site. If you want to start out with dvd''s or cds' go to http://www.ventriloquism101.com and buy Jimmy Nelson's Instant Ventriloquism. This two cd set has been remastered from records and is crystal clear. Jeff Dunham learned ventriloquism from Jimmy Nelson's course. I have it and listen to it often because you can never have too many tools but i still always point to the Maher Course. In fact, Lee Cornell even partnered with the course and added his own stuff. I don't have the combined Maher/Lee Cornell course but I'm sure it's really good.

Good luck,

Mark

Mark thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I will take on your advise and follow it. One of the reasons I joined puppethub was that I was quite certain that I would get good advise on subjects I´m very green yet.

Claudia,

One last thing and I hope I don't violate any rules by doing this. There's another ning site that's setup for ventriloquists, which I have an account with. It's called Vent Universe. No one ever seems to post anything but me but it's a young site and I'm hopeful that everything will pick up as the site continues to grow. Do check it out.
