Comment by bob abdou on September 11, 2009 at 5:07pm: Ventriloquism doesn't work at every venue, I was at an improv theatre last night and they wanted me to perform next week with vent and marionettes and it just was not a good fit. The audience mostly made up of students are expecting improv, I have done too many venues where I try to mix in with the acts and it just doesn't work. It is like being a variety act on America's got Talent show, where most of the acts are singers. this is just my take.

Comment by Rockwell on September 13, 2009 at 2:02pm: You do make a valid point. But on the same token, I always considered ventriloquism to be a rather malleable art form. It can be mixed, matched, and remolded with just about any other art form including stand-up, music, film, etc. I perform at poetry readings every month. It was really awkward at first because it was kind of like a conflict of interest, y'know? Lately, I have included comedic poetry and a'capella in my act as well as understanding that the intention of this particular show is to suit an eclectic audience anyway. They have included dancers, singers, and even rappers on their bill, which definitely bettered my situation. I have gotten to the point where I enjoy being in a show and standing out as "the ventriloquist." But of course as long as what I am doing in my act isn't too out of place.

Comment by bob abdou on September 13, 2009 at 3:52pm: any puppet act whether vent, marionettes, shadow, all these work GREAT at open mic venues. I love doing them myself. I perform a lot a open mic poetry night and the emcee appreciates my art form cause it makes the night not all poetry. What I was talking about in my last post was a structured show, it would be like singing opera at a KISS concert. it's music and singing, just not what the audience wants to hear or see.

Comment by bob abdou on September 21, 2009 at 9:46pm: here is a sad thought... why is the P of A having the national festival at the SAME time as the ventriloquist convention?? the vent convention has been at the same time for the past 35 years, I was asked to promote the P of A festival to my fellow vents and I told them I can't because whoever picked the 3rd week of july as the puppet festival had no clue about the vent convention. What is really sad is that in 2011 the convention is at the same time again, so you know what that means??? no vents will be there because they will all be at the ventriloquist convention. All vents are puppeteers but not all puppeteers are vents.
Not going to the national convention makes me sad.

Latest addition is Baby Wah Wah. She sings the baby blues, in baby cries...as I play the harmonica. Then I interpret singing the Baby Blues.(as heard years ago by Garison Keillor.

I have done it but can not command its use at all times, years of smoking I guess. When it works you would swear the voice was coming out of a box or out of thin air. while I am not a performer, a working vent, I did it once for a guy in a Wall-mart and he was astounded. You can learn this technique from the late great Paul Winchell's DVD "How to Become a Ventriloquist."
