It looks very complicated but actually boils down to two movements. The foot bar controls the leg mechanism Which in turn makes the legs move in a pre programmed step- and the scissor type bars above the footbar are for the opening and closing of the wings. Everything here is push-pull, you have a string for the forward moving of the leg and another for holding it backwards or releasing it at a very precise point. The wings have each two strings opening them up and one string closing them down. Its all automatic because the lengths of the levers is precisely calculated.
The REAL difficulty with this puppet is giving character to the head and neck with one hand while holding this machine in the other hand. Holding the proper heigth is also difficult because from above one only sees the tips of the feet.
