"Not sure how large you need but the plumbing industry has recently changed some standards that have made some of the PVC and of course CPVC tubing no longer code. I picked up some very light 1/2" PVC (Sorry I don't remember the schedule)…"

Where can you get firm thin pvc tubing or strong plastic straws? (for armature)

Look at the work of Theo Jansen. He builds giant mechanical creaturesusing the PVC tubing found in dutch households (as electricalinsulation). This is a bit like plastic canes of bamboo, the advantageof plastic being that you can heat up the ends of the canes and bendthem. I have looked in DIY shops for this firm tubing, but only found the moreflexible rubbery stuff that can be kept in a roll like rope. Drinking straws would be good enough (also they would be the right size for what I want to…See More

The Man.

MDF board bones and masking tape joints. Feet of washing liquid balls weighed down by plasticine.

Our headless newcomer takes a bow, to show that his torso has been bent into a V shape.

The V shape being held by duct tape and a small square of sponge.

Muscle added to the legs will give shape, and make sure the knees… Continue

Dressing the Door.

Posted on May 12, 2009 at 4:00pm 0 Comments

Here's the door. I want to give it a skin so I can color it. Has to be a skin that doesn't limit the movement. So I go with tshirt cotton.

Here's the door from the back. You can see I tried painting the foam it with a mix of latex and black acrylic. This has reminded me never to paint onto foam/sponge again. Especially not with anything wet. I dried out most of it with a paint drying gun, which gave the kitchen a characterful… Continue

The open stage.

Posted on May 11, 2009 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

I meant my stage to close like a box, but that doesn't give quite enough room. When the flaps open out it seems to be just the right amount.

Below is my stage opened out as mentioned.

This relies on a table surface ofcourse.

Here's the gap that needs filling in. Hard to measure exactly, but as long as it's symmetrical, that doesn't matter.

So the paper triangle is the size of the… Continue

To make a stage of a suitcase...

Posted on April 29, 2009 at 9:00am 2 Comments

I have this green suitcase.

And I have this 'stage'. From the front:

And from the side:

The four pieces fit into the suitcase. But I need to get them to fold and unfold instantly. In the picture they are only stuck together with tape. The MDF boards are very thin. So how would I screw hinges into them? Maybe I could glue hinges onto them? I… Continue

Hello and thank you for your comments about our T-rex project. The Design for the puppets mostly came from experience. We have built other parade puppets in the past and know some of the problems that can arise from making them.
My husband came up with most of the structural aspects to the puppets but not everything is totally figured out. Everyday we run into something new. We will keep posting out progress as the project continues.
