Dear Joseph,

In 1975 at age 21 I went to work in Wichita KS. for a company called Trotter Bros Productions. The Trotter Bros who were not brothers by the way had spent most of the career as a night club puppet act in Europe. They came back to their home in kansas and started a company that did large scale puppet shows. They got into the amusemenmt park business a few years into my stay with them, and at one point were considering hiring Jimmy to help build puppets for the upcoming season. We were building marionette variety shows for at least five different parks on the east coast by then. I think the time frame would be about 1978. I was asked my opinon about hiring Jimmy, and told them it would be a great idea and improve the quality of our product , and in fact take it to a whole different level. Now mind you the Trotter Bros[ their names were David Trotter and Bob Munson] were fully aware of how talented Jimmy was and decided not to hire him because Jimmy wanted the grand sum of $250.00 a week. Now mind you this was 1978 and he would have been earning much more than anyone else in the shop at that time, but would you believe they did not hire Jimmy because he was just too expensive? I know for a fact that they had more than enough money, and believe you me we worked more than a 40 hour week. In fact years later the Trots got in throuble for not paying minimum wage to some employees. I remember thing at the time boy are you guys dumb! Jimmy Roland for only $250 a week. Needless to say these guys were not the brightest pennies in the roll.

Relationship to Puppetry
Old Friend of Puppetry. OK. I've built enough to say I'm a builder again. Being away from it so long I didn't want to say that. I know I'd love if it paid enough to quit my day job. Fortunately on that front though, with the travel for work I've been able to see several shows and meet up with old puppet friends.
What First Got Me Interested in Puppetry
Lewis Parsons, Fred Cowan, Rudy Gaytan, Jimmy Rowland, Micheal Dallas and any other puppets that didn't just hang out stuck to a wall.

To me, Puppets want to move. They want to tell their stories, show their talents, express feelings. It is the task of the puppeteer to find those things in each of their characters that brings them to life. It's not just what a puppet can do. It's what you make the audience think they can do. It's that spark of life that we give to a puppet that captures some ones imagination if only for a moment that is the art we create. We use puppets to bring the beauty of Dreams, Fears, Loves, Sadness and Hopes into the forefront of the imagination of the audience.
