Relationship to Puppetry
I have been puppeteering since 1992. I consider myself a semi pro, as I have done numerous paid shows. I have performed at many conventions around the country, and have done puppet ministry as well. I love to puppeteer, and wish it was my career, but it is a very fun sideline for me.
What First Got Me Interested in Puppetry
I grew up watching Sesame Street and the Muppet Show, so had those as major influences. I had my first puppet built in 1992, and that started me finally getting into performing.
My Puppetry (or Puppet) Hero
Jim Henson, of course. :) I have also met several former Muppet performers who have given be good advice, those being Mike Quinn, Karen Prell, David Barclay, and Terry Angus. All have given me advice and encouragement.
If I Were a Puppet, I'd Be...
Probably my alter ego, Vixie. Should I be concerned that my puppet alter ego is a female fox?
More About Me:
I am a postal worker rl, and love animals. I have a house full of animal related items, and my puppets reflect that love. Favorites of mine include foxes, skunks, squirrels, raccoons, otters, and several others.
My Company/Troupe/Group
I have recently changed my name to Foxtale Puppets. Thanks to Brad Lowe for the help on the new name!

This great exhibit is now on its last stop at Lakeview Museum in Peoria, IL. If you live anywhere near Central Illinois, this is a must see. I will be running some puppetry workshops during the course of it's run, the first one will be February 28. More info can be found at http://www.lakeview-museum.org/

I hope some of you can come and see this, it's well worth the trip!

All Ready for Pokagon

Posted on October 6, 2010 at 7:25am 2 Comments

I have my registration sent in and my hotel room reserved, so all ready to attend the Potlatch in Pokagon for the first time. I am anxious to meet people from here and other new puppeteers, it sounds like a lot of fun. I will also be doing a workshop there on moving mouth puppet manipulation, so should be a full weekend. Hope to see a lot of you there!

My puppets are my ideas, but I am not a builder. Vixie was a commission, Sasha was built mainly by my friend who is the former Disney animator. Being as he is also an expert model builder, I asked if he'd like to attempt making a puppet, and he was willing to.

Vixie is my newest character, she only arrive in July. The puppet here is a new custom version of the character, the original is a stuffed animal converted into a puppet. The character has proved so popular I felt a custom version of her was needed, so I asked former Muppet performer Terry Angus if he'd be willing to build her. I have posted in progress pics of her online, I will see about posting the url.

Yep, but I'm downstate from you. I do make visits from time to time to the Chicago area, will be going up there in a few weeks to work on some planning for a convention I'll be performing at in November. Also have to show my new puppet off to some friends. :)

Wow, the soft marionette looks good.
How well does it move?

I've had trouble making one myself, in about the same size. My puppet's legs keep twisting around, because of how they join the body. It's a work in progress Is sometimes work on when I feel like it.

She moves fairly well, don't really have anything to compare her to. One thing, she is strung so that she moves more like a real animal. When I pull the leg strings, the knees move up, simulating real animal movement. Also, the back leg strings are crossed, so when tilt the control bar, the legs move opposite each other. I am going to be visiting the friend who built her next weekend, I'll see if I can get some video made to show a walk.

I love Vixie. Foxes are seriously one of my favorite animals and I just love her! haha. You have a lot of different variations of puppets. That is really neat. I have only dabbled in hand and rod puppets. very cool though.

Glad you like her. I love foxes as well, although how Vixie came about was sort of an accident, but a happy accident. Maybe one day I'll post more video so everyone can get to know her better.
