Bio

Artistic Director for the Oregon Puppet Theatre, Bruce Chessé is a second-generation puppeteer with more than 30 years experience. He is an internationally recognized puppet designer, manipulator, actor, director, and teacher. Bruce’s interest in puppetry is two- fold. He believes that puppetry is an inherently theatrical medium, and that persons of all ages and with a variety of skills can excel at this form of theatre. Bruce has performed and taught puppetry (since he began his professional puppetry career at 13) in such varied places as Ethiopia, Scandinavia, Japan, Puerto Rico and throughout the United States including many year as a artist in schools for Alaska Arts Education and as a consultant in Puppetry in Education for over 40 years.

He has been a professional actor for over 40 years A former native of San Francisco, he performed in the San Francisco Bay Area from 1953 to 1983 in movies, television and theater with his father Ralph and brother Dion. Chesse’s puppet creations have included commissioned works, giant parade puppets, (William Shakespeare for the Ashland Shakespeare Festival), puppet programs for video and TV. He has lived in Portland since 1983.

Still keeping busy, Bruce has just completed a new production of Benjamin Benjamin DDS in collaboration with and sponsored by Dr. Natalia Duvalko Complete Family Dentistry Offices. It is designed to bring about a greater understanding of the need for the proper caring of teeth

In 2003 he was as a puppeteer in The Big Sneeze, A Baroque Puppet Opera with The Carter Family Marionettes, the third in a yearly series presented at the Northwest Puppet Center in Seattle. In 2002 Bruce produced a series of vegetable promos for Odyssey Productions, Inc. Vegetables Want Your Vote, for the National Steinbeck Center. These are interactive videos now being shown in Monterey at the their center. His last collaboration with Susan Barthel was 1999 when they helped produce and build puppets for a production called Frog line News, a media CD Rom on Water conservation produce by New Media Magic.

Currently Bruce is semi-retired and in addition to Acting and Directing he is President of Chessé Arts Ltd.

About the Oregon Puppet Theatre:
Based in Portland, OPT has performed throughout the United States as well as Scotland, France, Switzerland, Japan, Micronesia, Scandinavia and Puerto Rico for over two decades.

Founded by Bruce Chessé and Susan Barthel in 1983, OPT is recognized world wide for its performances, workshops, puppetry classes and publications.

Bruce Chesse’, artistic director, is a second-generation puppeteer who began his career at age 13. He is an author and publisher of 2 books Puppets From Polyfoam and Puppets for Dreaming and Scheming by Judy Sims and is a pioneer in the field of Puppetry in Education.

OPT's puppets appear in three Price, Stern and Sloan’s Wee Sing, videos; Wee Sing in Sillyville, King Cole’s Party and Grandpa’s Musical Toys, as well as industrial films, Girl Scout promos, recycling shows with Portland’s METRO District and other commercial video productions.

OPT internationally, has performed at Charleville inFrance, the Scottish Mask and Puppet Center in Glasgow, Sapporo and others
