"Ah - so you are talking about the bracing that is holding the stage floor up in the air. Yes? From the earlier descriptions I was picturing something like a telescoping drinking tumbler, that stores small, but pulls up into a portable glass. And…"

Paper Bag Dragon Costume/puppet/mask

but in the mean time the Sugar Sand Park Puppet Fest has arrived. I wanted to do a tried and true paper finger puppet booth, but the park wanted a Big Parade Puppet to tie into the Far East - Far Out theme. So I created a template to make a Dragon Head out of poster board and mounted it on 3' pvc pipe. The project is to trace the pattern, cut out the parts, color, assemble, decorate and mount on the pipe. The expectation is about 100 puppets.
Then today, a week before the event I had another idea. I hope I can include it in the festival this time because I like it better than the dragon on a stick and I think it will cost less. It's based on a paper bag costume. Cut the holes for the arms and eyes (so you can see where you are going) and tape on the dragon parts. The jaw opens and closes. I used 2 straws taped to the lower jaw and a brass brad for a hinge point.

Punch & Judy Article

Punch & Judy's puppet regime still rules
As tasteless as candyfloss, as stomach-churning as the Big Dipper – no wonder children still love Britain's grossest seaside attraction.

That's the way to do it!

There's a guy named Dave Ridley in Manchester, New Hampshire who, on April 23rd, is going to challenge obsolete laws on that state's books by performing an illegal puppet show on the steps to the state capital in Concord. He's performing "The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail" .

Here's a link to a local newspaper article and the Blog with the whole story:…

Thanks, Dave.

Short answer to tech questions: Main material is black mat board. Rods are mostly dowels or music wire with dowel handles. Screen is rear projection vinyl or a bedsheet. Lamp is a 200 or 300 watt clear GE bulb. If you're after more tedious detail, to the tune of about 20 pages, you can give me your address and I'll send you my handout on materials and techniques, free! Whadda deal.

Does anybody have a good source to buy spinning plates? My daughter came back from camp (French Woods Festival in NYS) with a new skill...plate spinning! I want to order some but I'm not a plate spinner myself, so I'm not sure what to buy.
Any jugglers or French Woods Camp grads out there?

Regarding the plastic bag puppets and masks, they are all formed using a heat gun. The plastic bag puppet was my first inspiration although it has never been used in performance. It was a quick puppet to make, squeezing plastic bags around a 1" dowel to harden the limbs. The joints were made by leaving the plastic soft and unheated.

The masks have been more fun to make. I have experimented with 3.5mil clear plastic as well as a lighter mil trash bag. Using the heat gun to heat, shrink, and soften the plastic, I then shape it by pressing the plastic into a mold with a gloved hand. I have used both positive and negative plaster molds. Negative molds give the most detail but are also the more challenging to soften and shape properly. The plastic is also doubled or quadrupled in layers before applying heat. The more layers and thicker the plastic, the harder it is soften. It is a process of removing the plastic from the mold in order to apply heat to the opposite side and then quickly heat both sides and press.

Depending on how thick the plastic is once finished, the masks and puppets are anywhere from very pliable to rock hard.

I hope that wasn't too much detail. Let me know if you try any experiments with plastic.
