What First Got Me Interested in Puppetry
I stumbled upon a 'character' in an acting class. I thought I was going to "portray" this character as an actor and then it came to me that this was NOT the form this character wanted to take. He wanted to be moved not "played". Hence Magpie was born. Basically a sock puppet with a whole body...Bunraku style.
My Puppetry (or Puppet) Hero
Dark Crystal- Jim Henson, Rob D'Arc has been a continuing inspiration...I apprenticed with him during my time in Seattle. We eventually dropped the apprentice title and ended up calling it friendship! He is genius onmany levels, character development, mechanics and patterning to name a few. Thanks Rob!
If I Were a Puppet, I'd Be...
a pig in a chair
More About Me:
Over the years I rebuilt him (Magpie) about 6 times or so. He is how I learned how to build..at least initially. Then I stepped into creating Little Man Monk. I wanted to bring to life a creature of a certain ideology and then have him do something that would appear to be "out of alignment" within that particular framework . So, Little Man Monk, an esteemed individual of reverence and beingness also happens to be the gr(i)ndmaster poobah of hip hop. Lemme tell you, for someone who is kinda creaky in the bones....he can boogie with the best.

I am currently working on TWIG, my traveling theatre .. In the coming months I hope to launch this project on Kickstarter and will share that video when it is completed.

haha.. oh heidi, what a great story! And yes I thought he was a big piggy too! Oh its like something out of bagpuss, how sweet. I think I am the same way about most of the stuff I make.. can't really bear to sell them or give them away!

Will take a pic of the monster tree when the OH comes back from Orlando with the camera. What kind of business has their annual conference in disneyworld for gods sake!

hi Heidi.  Thank you for the friend add.  It's good to meet you.  I love your Little Man Monk films, especially Crow.  He looked magical sitting there all by himself! x

Hi Heidi;

Thank you for the friend add. The Possum puppet is made bu Steve Axtell of Axtell Expressions. I do make most of my own puppets, I have over 200 of them, although I have made many more. over the years some have worn out, or have been sold or discarded. I hate to part with them but many haven't been used in years and storage becomes a problem. Usually the last one I made is my favorite, until I make another. All of my puppets were made for a purpose, for a particular show or routine. So I guess I really don't have a favorite.

Thanks for the manger comments Heidi, The goal was to have it the roof of the manger look like beams of light coming out of the bottom of the star and that actually was achieved which then morphed into a black light siluette of the manger which later would light glow starting with the manger it’s self also came across well.  Hope that better explains it.  I know if it takes that much to explain it, chances are it didn’t work.  However it did the video failed in this case, live read very well.
